scratch1aug10.jpgIn a recent PC Pro article, Professor Steven Furber, developer of the ARM microprocessor, laments the sharp decline in interest in computer science classes in the UK. And although the U.S. hasn't seen that same drop in enrollment, a recent survey of some 14,000 U.S. high school teachers by the Computer Science Teachers Association found that only 65% of respondents taught in a school that offered some sort of introductory computer science course.

As our world becomes more tech-oriented, educators are faced with not just teaching children how to use computers, but how to build and program them as well.

"We need to get students interested in computer science and that has to be done at an early age before they decide (incorrectly) that they can't do computer science or that it is dull and boring," says Alfred Thompson, Microsoft's K-12 Computer Science Academic Relations Manager. The Official Flat Stanley Project

In 1995, Dale Hubert, a Grade 3 teacher in London, Ontario, Canada, began the Flat Stanley Project. He invited other teachers to take part by hosting flat visitors and to encourage their students to write their own Flat Stanley journals.

One of the many advantages of sending flat visitors is that they can visit friends by travelling in an envelope. Students' written work goes to other places by conventional mail and e-mail. You can check out the Flat Stanley List of Participants to see where you can send a Flat Stanley or who might be sending a Flat Stanley to you, but the best way to arrange exchanges is through the Bulletin Board. Promethean To Launch Platform-Neutral Interactive Whiteboard Software : January 2009 : THE Journal

Ed tech developer Promethean said it will release a new interactive whiteboard software suite that's designed to work with any whiteboard brand and on multiple platforms, including Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux. The software, called Activsoftware Inspire Edition, will debut next week at the 2009 FETC convention in Orlando, FL.

Activsoftware Inspire Edition combines Promethean's Activprimary and Activstudio suites and is designed to integrate with Activclassroom technologies, including Activote and Activexpression Learner Response Systems, according to the company. Some of the other features include:

* Option to upgrade for dual-input mode;
* Support for UI customization;
* Pre-packages media, including flipcharts, backgrounds, images, shapes and activities, available via Promethean Planet; and
* Support for integration with external media and software, including PowerPoint.

Promethean said Activsoftware Inspire Edition will be available in March. It will come in Personal and Professional editions. The professional edition will run $99 for new users but will be a free upgrade for existing customers or for new customers purchasing Activboards or Promethean Learner Response Systems.

High-school students here rarely get more than a half-hour of
homework a night. They have no school uniforms, no honor societies, no
valedictorians, no tardy bells and no classes for the gifted. There is
little standardized testing, few parents agonize over college and kids
don't start school until age 7.

Yet by one international measure, Finnish teenagers are among the
smartest in the world. They earned some of the top scores by
15-year-old students who were tested in 57 countries. American teens
finished among the world's C students even as U.S. educators piled on
more homework, standards and rules. Finnish youth, like their U.S.
counterparts, also waste hours online. They dye their hair, love
sarcasm and listen to rap and heavy metal. But by ninth grade they're
way ahead in math, science and reading -- on track to keeping Finns
among the world's most productive workers.

When Janet Webber’s three youngest children head to school, they don’t meet up with the yellow buses rolling through their Cumming subdivision.

Instead Roni, the seventh-grader, spreads books across the kitchen table and logs onto the computer. Webber leads her other two children —- a first- and third-grader —- upstairs, to a sunny room with two desks, a laptop computer and bookcases filled with textbooks.

The three kids spend the next five hours or so completing lessons designed by the Georgia Virtual Academy. The online charter school started in 2007 and has quietly become one of the largest public schools in the state. It teaches about 4,400 elementary and middle school students from 163 of the state’s 180 school districts.

When you aren't connected to the Internet, Google Docs uses information stored on your computer's hard drive rather than relying on information sent across the network.
